New Delhi [India], September 10 (ANI): Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday extended his best wishes to C P Radhakrishnan for being elected as the new Vice President of India.
He recalled the very first Vice President, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s words to act towards each party with fairness and impartiality, with ill-will to none and goodwill to all.
In a post shared on X, the Congress leader said, “While extending its best wishes to Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, the newly-elected Vice President of India who will also be the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Indian National Congress recalls the wise words of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the very first Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.”
Jairam Ramesh further stated that Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, on the opening day of the Rajya Sabha, said that he will uphold the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy and be fair and impartial towards each party.
The former VP also said that a democracy will degenerate to tyranny if oppositions don’t criticise government policies fairly and freely.
“On the opening day of the Rajya Sabha on May 16, 1952, the very eminent philosopher-educationist-author-diplomat had said: “I belong to no party, and that means I belong to every party in this House. It shall be my endeavour to uphold the traditions, the highest traditions, of parliamentary democracy and act towards each party with fairness and impartiality with ill-will to none and goodwill to all….A democracy is likely to degenerate into a tyranny if it does not allow the opposition groups to criticise fairly, freely, and frankly the policies of the Government,” Jairam Ramesh said in X post.
Jairam Ramesh further said that Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan practised what he preached, both in letter and spirit.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also congratulated C P Radhakrishnan on being elected as the Vice President of India and expressed his gratitude towards B Sudershan Reddy for contesting the elections with integrity and courage as the INDIA bloc’s Vice-Presidential nominee.
“Yesterday I participated in the Vice Presidential election along with my colleagues from Parliament. Exercising this responsibility is a reminder of the role each of us plays in protecting democratic institutions. I extend my congratulations to Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan on being elected as the Vice President of India,” the Congress MP said in an X post.
“I also convey my gratitude to Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu for contesting with integrity and courage as the joint candidate of a united Opposition. His campaign reminded us that this election was not only about numbers, but also about defending the values enshrined in our Constitution,” Gogoi added
Gogoi also added that the Vice President, as Custodian of the Rajya Sabha and one of the highest Constitutional authorities in our democracy, holds a position of great responsibility.
“The Vice President holds a position of great responsibility, both as the custodian of Rajya Sabha traditions and as one of the highest Constitutional authorities in our democracy. I hope the new Vice President will safeguard the dignity of Parliament, provide equal space to all voices, and act independently of political pressures,” he said.
