Patiala (Punjab) [India], December 4 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Preneet Kaur on Wednesday lauded Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s statement addressing the concerns of protesting farmers at the Delhi-Noida border.
In a post on X, Kaur emphasised the importance of engaging in dialogue with farmers to resolve their issues.
“Welcome VP Jagdeep Dhankhar ji’s statement emphasising the need for dialogue with farmers. I urge Shivraj Chouhan to initiate talks and find solutions to their problems. Farmers are our Annadatas, and their welfare is our top priority!” she said.
On Tuesday, Vice President Dhankhar questioned Shivraj Chouhan about the “promises” made to farmers by the previous Union Agriculture Minister and called for immediate discussions to address their grievances.
“Agriculture Minister, did the previous Agriculture Ministers make any written promises? If so, what happened to them?” the Vice President asked.
Highlighting the plight of protesting farmers, the Vice President remarked on India’s growing global stature, juxtaposing it with the challenges faced by its agricultural sector.
“Our reputation in the world has never been higher. In such a scenario, why is my farmer in distress? Why is he suffering? This is a serious issue, and ignoring it indicates impractical policy-making. No force in the country can suppress the voice of the farmer. A nation will pay a huge price if it tests the patience of its farmers,” he stated.
Farmer leader Naresh Tikait welcomed the Vice President’s remarks, reiterating the farmers’ desire for a resolution.
“The protest has been ongoing for many days. The government should sit down and discuss remunerations. They promised a seven-day resolution but instead took action yesterday. The policies concerning farmers seem unclear. Vice President Dhankhar’s statement is commendable. He, along with Rajnath Singh, should be part of a committee, and affected farmers must also be included. We want the matter resolved,” Tikait said.
The protest, led by the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) in collaboration with other farmer organisations, seeks compensation and benefits linked to agricultural reforms, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP). (ANI)
