New Delhi [India], April 3 (ANI): Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Thursday said that US administration’s imposition of 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India, will definitely have implications for India’s exports and the government needs to analyse how this will affect our the country ‘s economic growth.
“It will definitely have implications for our exports. I think it is incumbent on the Finance Minister to make an analysis and uprise the House and the nation on what these implications will be and how they will affect our economic growth,” the Congress MP told ANI.
US President Trump announced new import tariffs on Wednesday (US local time), outlining the rates to be imposed on countries around the world, with India facing a 26 per cent tariff.
The Congress MP said that the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in the early hours on Thursday because the government had the numbers adding that the interested and affected people will approach the Supreme Court.
“It has been passed in Lok Sabha because the government has the numbers, but I am sure that some of the interested and affected people will go to the Supreme Court. The matter is not over as yet. I think it will eventually have to be settled by the court,” Chidambaram said.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Jebi Mather said that the BJP-led Central government wants to ‘divide’ people on the basis of religion and the bill is just “one step” in that direction.
“Them (BJP) saying that it was long due is from their angle of wanting to divide people on the basis of religion. They have attempted this step in that direction… Inspite of various amendments submitted by the Opposition, nothing was considered… This is only the beginning of the danger hidden behind this government’s agenda. Now it’s Muslims, soon they will go to the next religion…” Mather told ANI.
The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and heated debate, during which members of the INDIA bloc fiercely opposed the legislation while the BJP and its allies strongly supported it, saying it would bring transparency and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards.
The House sat beyond midnight to pass the legislation. Speaker Om Birla later announced the result of the division. “Subject to correction, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The majority is in favour of the proposal,” he said.
The government brought the revised bill after incorporating the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which examined the legislation which was introduced in August last year. The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995. The Bill seeks to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India.
It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records. (ANI)
